What the index actually shows
Breadth
Over 2,000 firms, 567 names to go around
The index covers every firm with a seat on at least one billion-dollar AI cap table since 2023. More than 2,000 qualify. Only 567 companies are big enough to count, so most firms compete for the same short list.
Concentration
The top 10 hold about 12% of the weight
Trophy weight piles up at the very top. The ten highest-scoring firms hold roughly 12% of it. The top 100 hold about 40%. Everyone else splits what is left.
The long tail
Most firms hold exactly one
About 3 in 4 of those 2,000+ firms back a single billion-dollar AI name and stop there. Only about 50 sit on eleven or more. The crowd is at the bottom of the board, not the top.
Crowding
Everyone crowds the same shelves
The billion-dollar names cluster in a handful of sectors, and the same firms keep turning up on the same cap tables. Crowded sectors are where the trophy race is fiercest.

Methodology
Each investor earns one credit per AI unicorn it backed in any 2023-2026 funding round, deduped so a single company never counts twice. Credits are weighted by tier and summed into a single score.
Formula
- $100B Club: valuation at or above $100B (OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks...).
- Decacorns: $10B to under $100B.
- Unicorns: $1B to under $10B.
Window: 2023 through 2026 year to date. Counts all syndicate participants (lead and other), not just leads. 571 AI unicorns matched.
