What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that uses natural language processing to develop human-like conversations with users. Many individuals and businesses use it to research questions, automate repetitive tasks, optimize business operations, and compose content such as articles, social media posts, and scripts.

Although ChatGPT is similar to automated chatbots, this specific AI tool differs radically. It is paired with the power of machine learning to provide quicker and more complex responses to users.

Who Created ChatGPT?

ChatGPT was developed in 2015 by Open AI, an artificial intelligence research and deployment company. Founded by prominent entrepreneurs like Elon Musk and Sam Altman, ChatGPT launched officially to the public at the end of 2022. (OpenAI)

1. Since 2020, Chatgpt has launched over seven models, with the latest versions including GPT-4, GPT-4 turbo, and GPT-3.5-turbo. (OpenAI)

2. Beyond these models, Open AI runs Chatgpt on two distinct models: A second-generation embedding model (V2) and 16 first-generation models (V1). (OpenAI)

3. ChatGPT supports around 57 international languages and can generate spoken audio when it’s fed text in any of the languages supported. (OpenAI)

4. Open AI owns ChatGPT and uses the Whisper technology to provide two distinct speech-to-text endpoints when generating audio: transcriptions and translations. (OpenAI)

5. Although ChatGPT’s users can upload files to the AI chatbot, files are limited to 25MB. Furthermore, the AI chatbot only supports mp3, mp4, mpeg, mpga, m4a, wav, and WebM file formats. (OpenAI)

6. As Open AI continues to iterate on ChatGPT models, each new version presents new advancements in artificial intelligence. For example, InstructGPT is much better at following instructions than GPT-3. (Arxiv)

7. Furthermore, InstructGPT is less likely to fabricate facts and generate toxic outputs. Hence, the researchers prefer outputs generated by the 1.3B InstructGPT model over those generated by the 175B GPT-3 model. (Arxiv)

8. In the early development stage, ChatGPT was trained using an autoregressive model with about 175 billion parameters (10x more than the non-sparse language model). (Arxiv).

9. ChatGTP’s latest version, GPT-4, can take an input of about 25,000 words. This latest entry-level allows GPT-4 to create long-form content, carry extended conversations, and perform document analysis. (OpenAI)

10. Compared to the free version and ChatGPT 3.5 turbo, which can only handle 4,096 tokens, GPT-4 has a context length of between 8,192 and 32,768 tokens (about 50 pages worth of text). (OpenAI)

11. Additionally, GPT-4 is 82% less likely to respond to disallowed content and is 40% more likely to produce factual responses. (OpenAI)

12. GPT-4 speaks 25 languages better than GPT-3, including English, Mandarin, Swahili, Latvian, and Welsh. (OpenAI)

How Much Does it Cost to Run ChatGPT a Day?

When running ChatGPT, Open AI needs approximately 3,617 HGX A100 servers (28,936 GPUs) to keep the chatbox alive. It’s estimated that this technology costs the company approximately $700,000 daily. (Semi Analysis)

2. In January 2023, Microsoft invested $1B into Open AI to help the company develop artificial general knowledge tools (AGIs)that can contribute to economic growth. (OpenAI)

3. Although the global generative AI market is expected to reach $188.62B by 2032, experts predict the industry will experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 36.10% between 2023 and 2032. (The Brainy Insights)

4. To generate revenue, OpenAI developed ChatGPT Plus which is a paid subscription service. The user spends $20 monthly to use GPT-4 (ChatGPT Plus). With this subscription, users gain priority access to the AI chatbox during peak times. Furthermore, they get access to new products/features and are able to generate faster responses compared to users of GPT-3.5. (OpenAI)
